Shari Redstone helped build Paramount Global into a sprawling media empire, but if Sony Pictures Entertainment and private-equity giant Apollo Global Management succeed in acquiring it, they plan to break it all up, according to three people familiar with the matter. Paramount Pictures — home to blockbusters like “The Godfather,” “Top Gun” and the “Mission Impossible” franchise — would be combined with Sony’s existing business. They have not yet outlined this plan to Paramount or its advisers. CBS and Paramount have been controlled by the Redstone family for decades, since the media mogul Sumner Redstone assembled the sprawling conglomerate in a series of audacious deals. His daughter, Shari Redstone, championed a 2019 deal to reunite it through a merger with CBS, and remains Paramount’s controlling shareholder.

In a rare moment of solidarity, two entertainment giants are teaming up to try to get consumers to stop canceling their streaming services so frequently. Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Wednesday that they would start offering a bundle of their Disney+, Hulu and Max streaming services this summer, a sign of how rivals have become more willing to join forces in order to confront an ever-changing media landscape. The companies said that the bundle would be available to buy on any of the three streaming platform’s websites (Disney owns Disney+ and Hulu; Warner Bros. Discovery owns Max), and that there would be a commercial-free version as well as one featuring ads.

John Leguizamo said that "Encanto" was such a huge success that he received a bonus from Disney. AdvertisementDisney was apparently so pleased with the performance of its 2021 hit animated film "Encanto" that it gave members of the cast bonuses — at least, according to star John Leguizamo. For Leguizamo, one of those was Bruno, the reclusive uncle from "Encanto," a Disney animated film about a Colombian family with magical powers. "It was amazing," Leguizamo told BI. But past the numbers, Leguizamo told Business Insider that "Encanto" was so remarkable because of the specificity of its story.

Musi is a music-streaming app that has millions of users, especially among teens. It works by streaming music from YouTube, and unlike Spotify, it doesn't make deals with record labels. Wired reports that Musi is a free music streaming app out of Canada that's especially popular with teenagers. And unlike Apple Music or Spotify, which make their own deals with record labels and pay artists for streams, Musi works quite differently. It essentially streams music from YouTube — and Musi runs its own ads against those streams.

Ad industry watchers are waking up to the fact that TV's big star is Google's YouTube. YouTube is ready to capitalize as it heads into TV's big upfront selling season. Industry observers widely believe YouTube is taking in far less ad revenue than it should be, based on its share of view time. Why YouTube is big on live sportsYouTube also affirmed its commitment to the industry's most sought-after content, live sports. YouTube still faces legacy ad buying structures where some agencies still buy old-fashioned TV and social video separately.

Last year in the second quarter, Disney+ and Hulu lost $587 million. The thesis among all major legacy media companies has been that streaming will eventually take over for cable TV as the primary money-making engine. It's not just that Disney nearly made money in streaming — it's that the company's traditional linear TV results were awful. Next year, Disney will launch its flagship ESPN streaming service, which will allow consumers to subscribe to ESPN without cable at all. Looking at Disney's results in the second quarter, it's clear why the company has finally pulled the ripcord on ESPN.

But that wasn't enough for Wall Street, with the stock diving as much as 11% following the earnings report, its worst daily decline in 18 months. Related storiesWhile Disney+ added 6.3 million new subscribers in the quarter, its total number of streaming subscribers, 153.6 million, was below Wall Street estimates by about 2 million. AdvertisementThe sharp move lower highlights the high standard Wall Street has set for Disney's streaming portfolio, which includes Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, and India's Hotstar. So far, that doesn't appear to be happening, at least not at a quick enough pace for Wall Street. And while Disney's streaming business is moving in the right direction overall, it will likely still be a bumpy ride ahead for the unit to deliver consistent profits.

Disney Why we own it: We value Disney for its best-in-class experiential entertainment Parks business, which has proven to have immense pricing power. In the second quarter, the combined business — Disney+, India's Disney+ Hotstar, Hulu and ESPN+ — saw losses of $18 million, far better than the $659 million loss in the year-ago period. DTC profitability benefited from Disney+ core subscriber growth, higher retail subscription prices, increased advertising revenue on the back of higher impressions, and lower distribution costs. Clearly, Disney still has a big opportunity in sports as they execute on their DTC streaming strategy for ESPN. In a Surprise, Disney+ Becomes Profitable

When Disney reported robust earnings in February, the activist investors then circling the company essentially called it a stunt — a temporary, heat-of-battle effort to fend them off and not, as Robert A. Iger maintained, proof that a struggling Disney had finally “turned the corner.”The Disney chief’s argument just got a lot stronger. Disney blew past Wall Street’s expectations for a second consecutive quarter on Tuesday, in part because its flagship streaming service made money — a first. Disney+ had been expected to lose more than $100 million in the most recent quarter, widening losses since its 2019 arrival to roughly $12 billion. The company had previously predicted that Disney+ would become profitable in September; some investors and analysts have been skeptical about that, putting downward pressure on Disney shares. Disney’s per-share earnings for the most recent quarter rose 30 percent increase from a year ago.
